Women Leading Water Spotlight Series

The water industry is driven by individuals who care deeply about the work they do.

Our Women Leading Water Spotlight Series features women from the organizations supporting this initiative by sharing their journeys, reflections on leadership, and what being a woman in water means to them today.

We’re grateful to spotlight the voices and perspectives that help strengthen and support the water community. Join us to celebrate Women Leading Water this March at The Water Tower.

Can you share a bit about your journey and what led you to work in water?

I have always had an interest in the environment and the biological sciences. In high school I attended some career fairs that highlighted environmental leaning careers and so I decided to get a degree in Environmental Engineering. After graduating from college, my first job was with a State regulatory agency which managed solid waste landfills. I realized after 1.5 years that I needed more of a challenge than working for a regulatory agency and obtained a position with the Sarasota County Utility Department. That position was working on a program to develop a water supply for Sarasota County since at that time they purchased all of their water from a neighboring County. That project included a new wellfield, new water treatment plant, several miles of transmission lines and a new pump station. That gave me a pretty broad basis on the challenges of the water industry and I have continued my career in the water industry since that time.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is getting to work on large water conveyance projects where we are providing regional solutions to water supply.

Why is celebrating women in water so important?

By bringing distinct perspectives, expertise, and critical soft skills to the table, women in this industry play a pivotal role in strengthening project success and providing long term planning solutions to water supply.

What advice would you give to young women just joining the water industry?

Women tend to second guess themselves more than their male counterpoints. They should be confident in their skills and knowledge and know that they have earned their seat at the table.

We thank Beth and our sustaining partner, STV, for supporting Women Leading Water and sharing their perspective with our community!
